How to Take Chantix®
- Begin by selecting a date when you would like to stop smoking.
- You will start taking Chantix® 7 days (one week) prior to the date when you would like to stop smoking. Starting the medication before you stop smoking will give Chantix® time to build up in your system. You can still smoke during these 7 days if you desire. For some people it takes a few weeks before Chantix® works its best.
- Take Chantix® with a full eight ounce glass of water after eating.
- On average, people taking Chantix® will continue the regimen for 12 weeks. If after 12 weeks you have completely stopped smoking, speak with your physician to see if another 12 weeks of Chantix® will give you a better chance to keep from smoking again.
- Some people find that the Pfizer Get-Quit™ program is helpful for extra support. This program is one year long and requires the Pfizer code on you will find on your Chantix® prescription package. Chantix® comes in 2 different colored tablets - white and blue. You will take the white (0.5 mg) tablet first and then move to the blue (1.0 mg) tablet.
Side Effects
Side effects most common with Chantix® are upset stomach or vomiting, abnormal changes to sleep patterns (including changes in dreaming), gas or constipation. As with any prescription medication you should speak with a medical professional if the symptoms continue or become problematic.
Be careful when operating heavy machinery or driving until you understand how you react to quitting smoking and taking Chantix®.
Precautions
Never use a prescription medication, including Chantix®, for a condition other than that for which it was prescribed. Never share your medication with others as it may cause them harm.
Drug Interactions
Inform your online physician of any prescription and nonprescription medications, including herbal supplements and vitamins that you currently use. Quitting smoking may cause changes in the effectiveness of your medications, especially those used to treat asthma, insulin abnormalities and those used to thin the blood.
Missed Dose
In the event of a missed dose, take your Chantix® as soon as possible. If it is nearing the time of your next scheduled dose, wait and take that dose as usual.
Storing Chantix®
Keep Chantix® at room temperature, 59 - 86 degrees Fahrenheit (15 - 30 degrees Celsius). Be sure to store the tablets in a dry place away from light. Discard any unused or expired medication in a safe place and always keep prescription drugs out of children's reach.

It is not recommended that children under 18 years old take Chantix® as its effects have not been studied on this age group. Tell your doctor of any allergies before taking Chantix®
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION AND INDICATION
When you try to quit smoking, with or without CHANTIX, you may have symptoms that may be due to nicotine withdrawal, including urge to smoke, depressed mood, trouble sleeping, irritability, frustration, anger, feeling anxious, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, decreased heart rate, and increased appetite or weight gain.
Some people have had new or worse mental health problems, such as changes in behavior or thinking, aggression, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping CHANTIX. These symptoms happened more often in people who had a history of mental health problems. Stop taking CHANTIX and call your healthcare provider right away if you, your family, or caregiver notice any of these symptoms. Before starting CHANTIX, tell your healthcare provider if you ever had depression or other mental health problems.
Some people have had seizures during treatment with CHANTIX. Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of seizures. If you have a seizure, stop taking CHANTIX and contact your healthcare provider right away.
New or worse heart or blood vessel problems can happen with CHANTIX. Tell your healthcare provider if you have heart or blood vessel problems or experience any symptoms during treatment. Get emergency medical help right away if you have symptoms of a heart attack or stroke.
Sleepwalking can happen with CHANTIX, and can sometimes lead to harmful behavior. Stop taking CHANTIX and tell your healthcare provider if you start sleepwalking.
Do not take CHANTIX if you have had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. These can happen with CHANTIX and can be life-threatening. Stop taking CHANTIX and get medical help right away if you develop swelling of the face, mouth, throat or neck; trouble breathing; rash with peeling skin, or blisters in your mouth.
Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how CHANTIX affects you. Decrease the amount of alcohol you drink while taking CHANTIX until you know if CHANTIX affects your ability to tolerate alcohol.
The most common side effects of CHANTIX include nausea (30%), sleep problems (trouble sleeping, vivid, unusual, or strange dreams) constipation, gas and/or vomiting. If you have side effects that bother you or don’t go away, tell your healthcare provider.

CHANTIX is a prescription medicine to help adults stop smoking. You may benefit from quit-smoking support programs and/or counseling during your quit attempt. It's possible that you might slip up and smoke while taking CHANTIX. If you do, you can stay on CHANTIX and keep trying to quit.
