return to Erectile Dysfunction articles
It’s been estimated that more than 18 million men in America over the age of 20 suffer from erectile dysfunction (or ED). In the population of men over 65 years of age, nearly 15% to 25% suffer from ED. In fact, up to 75% of men have or will experience ED at some point in their lives. It happens and is certainly nothing to be ashamed about.
While there is currently no “cure” for erectile dysfunction, there are a number of treatment options available to help get your sex life back on track.
PDE5 Inhibitors
Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors) are medications that help blood flow to the penis by relaxing the smooth muscles and allowing the penis to become filled with blood, enabling a man to achieve and maintain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse to take place.
VIAGRA®, CIALIS® and LEVITRA® are all classified as PDE5 inhibitors and normally begin working within 30 minutes to an hour after being taken.
Contrary to popular belief, PDE5 inhibitors do not cause an erection without sexual stimulation.
It’s important to note that there are currently no FDA approved generic forms of these medications available. Medications should only be prescribed after a medical assessment to ensure that you will not have any major health complications as a result of taking medication.
Beware of any company or business selling PDE5 “generics” or discounted products.
