What is Nora-BE®?

Nora-BE® may also be referred to as a POP-Progestin-only pills or the mini-pill. The main ingredient in this oral contraceptive is a type of progesterone called norethindrone. Like other oral contraceptives, Nora-BE® effectively reduces the risk of pregnancy by preventing ovulation (the release of the egg) and also by thickening the cervical mucus. Nora-BE® can also affect other hormones, the fallopian tubes and the lining of the uterus. These changes not only make it more difficult for the sperm to reach the egg, but also makes it harder for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterine wall if the sperm does make it to the uterus. Nora-BE® is most effective when used exactly as directed by the physician or pharmacist. Missing doses will decrease the effectiveness. If you do miss a dose, refer to the information provided with your medication for directions on how to proceed.

Other uses for Nora-BE® include the treatment of menstrual disorders, abnormal bleeding and endometriosis. For women experiencing heavy bleeding, pain or abnormal/irregular periods, oral contraceptives are especially effective as a treatment method.

For most women, Nora-BE® can be used safely. There are certain conditions however that can lead to side effects. For women who smoke (especially those who are over the age of 35), oral contraceptives can be particularly hazardous. This is because these women are at a greater risk of developing blood clots which can be deadly in some cases. If you smoke, you should discuss these risks with your doctor prior to beginning an oral contraceptive regimen.

Other disorders, cancers or diseases may make a woman a poor candidate for oral contraception. Be sure to disclose all medical history and medications when consulting with your doctor.

Online Consultation - there is no fee for this consultation

If you are approved, you will be charged only for the cost of the Nora-BE®. There are no hidden costs.

How to Take Nora-BE®

Nora-BE® is a once daily oral progestin only pill (POP) used for pregnancy prevention. Once prescribed, you can begin taking your 28 day pill pack on the first day of your period.

Side Effects

Women who smoke, especially those over 35, should note that there is an increased risk of cardiovascular complications in smokers including, stroke, heart attack and blood clots when taking oral contraceptives. Most side effects associated with Nora-BE® are not serious; however, the most common side effect associated with this oral contraceptive is a change in menstrual bleeding, making periods earlier or later than normal and dizziness. Less common side effects include headaches, tender breasts and nausea.

Precautions

Women who have certain cancers, blood clots, are pregnant or have a history of heart attack, stroke or blood clots should not take oral contraceptives. If you have a known allergy to progestin you should tell your doctor prior to taking Nora-BE®. Nora-BE® does not protect against HIV infection or any other sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

Drug Interactions

There are certain drugs that may interact with birth control pills, making them less effective in preventing pregnancy or causing an increase in breakthrough bleeding. These drugs include but are not limited to some antibiotics, medications treating epilepsy and some HIV medications. The herbal supplement St. John's Wort has been associated with breakthrough bleeding and pregnancies. Be sure to disclose all medication (over-the-counter and prescription), vitamins and herbal supplements you are currently taking before starting on any birth control pill.

Missed Dose

The more pills you miss, the more likely you are to become pregnant. If you miss (or are at least 3 hours late in taking) an "active" pill, take it as soon as you remember and then take your next pill at the normal time that same day. Be sure to use a backup form of birth control for 48 hours after taking the missed dosage. For additional missed dosages speak with your doctor or refer to the information provided by the pharmacist with your prescription.
